Out of the Archives: Shoes

Marlene Dietrich's favorite shoes. She wore these at a performance in which she fell off the stage into the orchestra pit. You can see the drop of blood on the toe of the right shoe in this image. As the story goes, she insisted that the entire audience leave the house of the auditorium before she would allow medics to carry her away.

The shoes of George Balanchine.

A slipper of Rudolf Nureyev's. Note blood.

The shoes of American choreographer Jerome Robbins.

My shoes.

My boots.

Love it! This might be my favorite post. You might add that photo I took of you, Jacob and Anna's shoes in Portland.

mikey, you need some new boots. i know you're going for the whole "these are my boots, I've had 'em forever" look, but really, time to break in a new pair.

I got these boots when I was 16, and brought them to Watermill with the specific plan of taking them to their final death on Long Island. Sit back and enjoy the show.

Love it Mike!

I say you wear the boots until you can note the blood! :)

Perhaps-- during your stint at Watermill-- you should do a piece or performance entitled "Taking Them To Their Final Death on Long Island." With or without the boots, as you see fit.

Following sarah p's cue, you might use the bloody shoe (archival and otherwise) as a launching pad for "Taking them..."

Is the picture misleading, or did Jerome Robbins have big feet?

Tiff,
First and foremost, its a pleasure and blessing to have you appear on my blog! I'm sending my love...

And secondly, I took another look at the Jerry Robbins shoes, and they size in around an 8 or 9. I can no longer see the numbers on the labels. And they're Reboks, of course.

XO
